About Cheryl Whitehall

We artists are told that we shouldn’t paint it all.

That is difficult since it is all so enticing.
Look at the wild flowers, how they bounce in the breeze.
Look at the wisdom in an ancient face.
Look at the intrigue and the mystery found in the night.

I do want to paint it all.

I love painting Colorado both day and night. Living in the mountains above Boulder I might paint wildflowers in the morning and along Boulder Creek in the afternoon. I love capturing the essence of Colorado.

I paint both in pastel and oil. Pastel is pure pigment, no water, and no turpentine, just pigment on paper. The pastels have intense luminosity. They may be used like pencils for realism, tossed on the paper for abstraction, or layered for shimmering light. If you asked a representational artist about my style the reply would be, “She is impressionistic.” If you asked an impressionist the reply would be, “She is representational.” Judge for yourself!
